In Sydney’s Surry Hills, Pattern Studio reinvigorates a traditional terrace into Yolo House where clever planning has transformed what felt small and cramped into an open and original residence. Redesigned with vibrant details, it is a refined yet joyful home that balances efficiency, intimacy and unexpected delight.

The kitchen is expressive and adventurous, defined by rounded, unexpected material choices and a bold use of colour. A sculptural floating island in stainless steel sits atop a burled timber plinth ‘runway’, setting the stage for daily life while bringing elegance to the compact terrace home. Rounding out the clash of form and colour are sea-green ceramic handles.
“The design’s meticulous planning enabled small-space living to feel not just convenient and comfortable, but utterly delightful.” Lily Goodwin and Josh Cain, Directors, Pattern Studio

Seamlessly integrated into the stainless-steel island, the V-ZUG V4000 I604 induction cooktop disappears into the surface, enhancing a sense of quiet luxury. Its understated presence lets the expressive blue cabinetry and cylindrical butter yellow exhaust fan take centre stage, striking a balance of precision and light-hearted design.

Housed within the wall of blue-tinted timber veneer joinery, the V-ZUG Combair V4000 oven embodies the project’s ethos: practicality and beauty in harmony. Through the layers of reflective surfaces – from the black mirrored glass of the oven and the stainless steel bench – fragments of reflected blue bounce around, embedding the appliance within the whole.
“The message really was that architecture and design can – and should – make our lives fuller, richer, more beautiful, and ultimately happier. These spaces aren’t precious; they are robust, practical, and extremely hard working.” Lily Goodwin and Josh Cain, Directors, Pattern Studio
