In Mayens d’Arbaz, in the Sion district in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, Pierre Métrailler Architecte has reworked a holiday chalet designed for convivial, relaxed family time. The house opens onto the lower Rhône Valley with views stretching all the way to Mont Blanc. A key concept is that the kitchen tucks neatly under the mezzanine, preserving the outward views and double-height volume.
Integrating within the existing space, the kitchen and staircase have been reimagined for better flow. The stair is conceived as a natural extension of the kitchen joinery, drawing out the warmth and authenticity in the materials. Throughout, the Alpine character of the original timber panelling has been preserved and elevated with subtle contemporary touches.

A V-ZUG CombiCookTop V4000 sits atop Verde Alpi stone on the benchtops, which is coupled with black MDF fronts and finely detailed ash handles for a calm yet graphic effect. V-ZUG’s CombiSteamer V6000 and warming drawer also sit flush within the joinery, their black glass fronts mirroring the palette while delivering precise steam cooking that matches the aesthetic of quiet refinement.
